This isn’t the first time that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has been caught selling counterfeit Viagra and other fake erectile dysfunction medications. But it’s the latest twist in the ongoing battle to avoid stiff competition for the top spot in the U. S. market. The U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week approved the first generic version of Viagra for patients 18 and older, with the active ingredient in the drug being sildenafil citrate.

In a statement, Pfizer said: “Pfizer and the FDA are committed to providing the world with a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED).”
But what exactly is sildenafil? It’s a prescription medication approved by the FDA for treatment of male sexual function in men. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps a man get and keep an erection. Sildenafil is used to treat conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and pulmonary arterial hypertension- (PHB) is when the arteries in the lungs become narrow.
There’s no known effective dose for most patients, but the FDA has approved sildenafil for patients 18 and older.
